Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is essential for preventing cavities, gum disease and other dental issues. Our dentists and team are committed to educating patients on the best practices for brushing and flossing to ensure a healthy smile.

How to Brush Your Teeth
Brushing your teeth correctly is the foundation of good oral hygiene. Here are some tips to make sure you are brushing effectively:

  • Choose the Right Toothbrush: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush (electric, if possible) that fits comfortably in your mouth.
  • Use Fluoride Toothpaste: Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.
  • Brush for Two Minutes: Spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth, making sure to clean all surfaces.
  • Proper Technique: Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Use gentle, circular motions to brush the outer, inner and chewing surfaces of your teeth.
  • Do Not Forget Your Tongue: Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.

How to Floss Your Teeth
Flossing is essential for removing plaque and food particles between teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach:

  • Use Enough Floss: Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind it around your middle fingers, leaving an inch or two to work with. (Disposable floss picks are also an excellent alternative.)
  • Proper Technique: Gently slide the floss between your teeth. Curve it into a C-shape against one tooth and gently slide it up and down. Repeat on the other side of the gap.
  • Be Gentle: Avoid snapping the floss into your gums to prevent irritation.
